New Delhi: Results for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-elections across 12 wards have been declared. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 7 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured 3, and Congress and the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) won one seat each. Earlier, these 12 wards were held by 9 BJP councillors and 3 AAP councillors.
This was the first election in Delhi after the formation of the new BJP government, and the party has suffered a loss of two seats. Meanwhile, Congress managed to open its account in these bypolls.
The wards won by the BJP include Dwarka-B, Ashok Vihar, Greater Kailash, Dichau Kalan, Shalimar Bagh-B, Vinod Nagar, and Chandni Chowk.
AAP won from Naraina, Mundka, Dakshinpuri, and one more ward. Congress candidate Suresh Chaudhary secured a victory from Sangam Vihar-A with a margin of 3,628 votes — the party’s only win. From Chandni Mahal, AIFB’s Mohammad Imran emerged victorious.
Voting for these 12 wards took place on 30 November. This time, voter turnout stood at 38.51%, significantly lower than the 50.47% turnout recorded in the 2022 MCD elections held across 250 wards.
