TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on March 28, 2026, sharply criticised the BJP over incidents of violence during Ram Navami processions in West Bengal. Addressing a public rally, he described the BJP as a “party of rioters” and accused it of instigating unrest during the religious event.
Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters brought in outsiders into the processions to create tension and disturb West Bengal’s tradition of communal harmony. He questioned why violence occurs specifically during Ram Navami events organised with BJP involvement, while other festivals in the state pass peacefully.
Violence in Murshidabad
Tension erupted in parts of Murshidabad district, particularly in the Raghunathganj and Jangipur areas, during Ram Navami processions on March 27, 2026. Reports indicate incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, arson and clashes between groups. Police resorted to lathi-charge and imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in sensitive areas.
According to officials, around 30 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Security has been tightened and additional forces deployed to prevent further escalation.
Appeal for Peace
Banerjee urged people to maintain calm and not let political rivalries affect social unity. He stated that West Bengal has a history of celebrating different festivals together and warned against using religious occasions for political gains.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions in poll-bound West Bengal between the TMC and BJP, with both sides trading accusations over law and order and communal issues.
This incident has once again brought focus on the sensitive nature of religious processions in the state and the challenges of maintaining peace during major festivals.
