West Bengal: In a highly sensitive turn of events, suspended MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a proposed “Babri Masjid” at Beldanga(Mursidabad) today, even as the Calcutta High Court declined to block the ceremony — placing the onus on the Bengal government to ensure law and order.
Court clearance, but strict condition on security
A division bench comprised of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen heard a public interest litigation seeking to restrain the “shilanyas” — or foundation stone–laying — of the mosque. The petitioners argued that the move risked communal disturbances. However, the court refused to intervene, stating that “law and order” must be maintained by the state authorities.
The bench clarified that while the ceremony may proceed, “adequate state provisions” must be taken to prevent any disturbance or polarisation.
Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir proceeds with ceremony despite party suspension
Earlier this week, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) had suspended its MLA Humayun Kabir for invoking the idea of building a “Babri Mosque” in Murshidabad, calling his proposal an act of “communal politics.”
Undeterred, Kabir re-affirmed that he considers the mosque construction a constitutional right. During the ceremony, he reportedly stated that the proposed mosque complex will also include a hospital, an educational institution, and a rest house — inviting supporters to view the initiative as a broader community project.
Kabir further declared he will form a new political party on December 22.
Security clamp-down as event draws thousands
Ahead of the foundation-laying ceremony, authorities deployed over 3,000 police personnel from local, state, and central forces to Beldanga and adjoining areas, including units of RAF and BSF.
Local administration has reportedly set up security perimeters, and national highway NH-12 has been kept on high alert due to fears of unrest.
Officials said the gathering has drawn people not only from Murshidabad but neighbouring districts, with large turnout expected.
Political and social implications
The ceremony — coming on the anniversary of the demolition of the original Babri Masjid in Ayodhya — is being viewed as a provocative move that could reignite communal tensions in Bengal, a state with a sensitive religious and social balance. Critics warn that naming a new mosque after the demolished “Babri Masjid” may be seen as symbolically charged, potentially polarising communities ahead of future elections.
TMC leaders have distanced themselves from Kabir’s initiative, reiterating that the party does not endorse such communal projects. The suspension of the MLA underscores the party’s attempt to maintain its secular credentials amid growing backlash.
Nevertheless, supporters of the mosque plan argue that it is a matter of constitutional right and religious freedom. Kabir, in his address, emphasized that every citizen — regardless of faith — should have the right to build a place of worship.
