Major Upgrade Planned for IAF MiG-29 Fleet
The Indian Air Force is moving ahead with a plan to significantly enhance the combat capability of its upgraded MiG-29UPG fighter jets by integrating the advanced ASRAAM short-range air-to-air missile.
The Defence Ministry has initiated the process by issuing a Request for Proposal on March 25, 2026, for the integration and certification of the ASRAAM missile on the MiG-29UPG platform, along with associated equipment, launchers, and training.
This upgrade will replace the older Soviet-era R-73 missile, which has been the primary short-range weapon on the MiG-29 for decades. The ASRAAM offers better performance, longer engagement range, and improved accuracy in within-visual-range combat.
Key Features of ASRAAM
The Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM), developed by European company MBDA, is a modern heat-seeking missile known for its high speed (over Mach 3), advanced imaging infrared seeker, and fire-and-forget capability. It allows pilots to engage targets quickly with greater confidence during dogfights.
The missile has already been successfully integrated with the Indian Air Force’s LCA Tejas and Jaguar aircraft. Extending it to the MiG-29 fleet will help standardise weapon systems across different platforms and simplify logistics and training.
Strategic Importance
The Indian Air Force currently operates more than 55 MiG-29 aircraft, including trainer variants. These fighters continue to form an important part of India’s air defence. Equipping them with a modern European missile is expected to improve their effectiveness against advanced threats from adversaries.
Defence experts view this as a timely step to keep the MiG-29 fleet relevant in evolving aerial warfare scenarios.
The integration process is expected to move forward in the coming months as part of the IAF’s ongoing modernisation efforts.
