A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Tonga in the South Pacific on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor occurred near the town of Neiafu and was felt across parts of the island nation.
Epicentre and Depth Details
The earthquake’s epicentre was located about 150 kilometres west of Neiafu. It struck at a depth of roughly 237 kilometres, making it a deep-focus quake that typically causes less surface damage.
No Immediate Damage or Tsunami Threat
Despite its high magnitude, authorities reported no immediate damage or casualties. Officials also confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the seismic event.
