Apple has entered a new phase of leadership as Tim Cook steps down as Chief Executive Officer after nearly 15 years at the helm, with hardware engineering chief John Ternus officially taking over as the company’s new CEO from September 1, 2026. Cook will continue to remain closely associated with the company as its Executive Chairman. The leadership transition marks the end of one of the longest CEO tenures in Apple’s modern history. Cook became CEO in 2011 after succeeding Steve Jobs and oversaw the expansion of Apple’s product ecosystem and services business.
John Ternus Becomes Apple CEO
John Ternus, who previously served as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has now assumed the top executive position. He has been with Apple since 2001 and has played a major role in the development of products across the company’s hardware portfolio, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. Ternus has a background in mechanical engineering and holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. His long experience working on Apple’s hardware products makes the transition particularly significant as the company prepares for its next generation of devices.
Tim Cook Moves to Executive Chairman Role
Cook is not leaving Apple entirely. He has moved into the role of Executive Chairman of the company’s board and is expected to continue supporting Apple on selected matters, including engagement with policymakers around the world. During Cook’s tenure, Apple expanded significantly across hardware and services, with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods becoming major parts of its ecosystem. The company also expanded services including iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple Music and Apple TV.
Ternus Faces Major Challenges Ahead
The change comes at a crucial time for Apple. The company is facing increasing competition in artificial intelligence, evolving smartphone technology and complex global supply-chain challenges. One of Ternus’ immediate priorities will also be the company’s upcoming iPhone launch. Apple has scheduled its major September product event for September 9, 2026, which is expected to introduce the next iPhone lineup and could potentially include the company’s first foldable iPhone. The event will be closely watched as Ternus’ first major product presentation as CEO. The leadership change therefore comes at a defining moment for Apple, with Ternus expected to balance the company’s established product strategy with its ambitions in AI and emerging technologies.
