CM Rekha Gupta Attacks AAP Over Financial Burden
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the financial condition of the national capital, accusing it of leaving behind large loans and several unfinished development projects.
Speaking in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Gupta said the current government had inherited significant liabilities from the previous administration and was now working to stabilise finances while continuing development initiatives.
The Chief Minister claimed that several infrastructure works initiated during the earlier government were either delayed or remained incomplete, which added pressure on the state’s finances.
Questions Raised Over Development Projects
During the Assembly discussion, Gupta alleged that multiple projects launched under the previous administration had exceeded their original budgets due to delays and mismanagement.
She said the government was reviewing these projects to determine why costs had increased and whether proper accountability had been ensured. According to the Chief Minister, the review is intended to ensure that public funds are used responsibly and that pending works are completed efficiently.
Budget Focuses on Infrastructure and Development
The remarks came during discussions related to Delhi’s budget planning and financial management. The Delhi government recently presented a budget of around ₹1,03,700 crore for the 2026–27 financial year, which includes allocations for infrastructure development, environmental initiatives, and public welfare schemes.
A significant portion of the budget has been earmarked for capital expenditure and infrastructure projects, with funds also allocated for environmental programmes such as the cleaning of the Yamuna River.
Political Exchange Between BJP and AAP
The statements by Gupta triggered political reactions, highlighting ongoing tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi and the opposition AAP.
Opposition leaders have previously criticised the government’s budget and policy priorities, calling for greater transparency and improvements in public services.
Focus on Financial Accountability
The Chief Minister emphasised that the government aims to strengthen financial accountability while ensuring that development projects continue without unnecessary delays.
She said that reviewing earlier projects and understanding the financial liabilities inherited from the previous administration would help the government plan future infrastructure and welfare programmes more effectively.
