X Accepts Mistakes in Content Moderation
Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has acknowledged shortcomings in its content moderation system and assured the Indian government that it will strictly block the generation and spread of obscene AI-generated images. The company has also committed to fully complying with Indian laws.
According to government sources, this action was taken after explicit and objectionable content started going viral on the platform.
3,500+ Posts Blocked, 600 Accounts Removed
X informed authorities that it has already blocked more than 3,500 pieces of content and deleted over 600 accounts that were found to be involved in spreading or creating such material. The company said India is a key market and it will respect local regulations while strengthening its content moderation framework.
Government Warning After MP’s Complaint
The issue came into focus after Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 2, flagging the misuse of X’s AI chatbot Grok.
Following this, the central government issued a notice to X on the same day, asking it to immediately remove obscene and vulgar content generated using Grok, warning of legal action if the platform failed to comply.
Allegations of Misuse Against Women
The MP pointed out that on X, fake accounts were being used to upload photos of women and manipulate them using AI, including altering clothes or presenting images in an objectionable way. She said this was not limited to fake profiles but also targeted real women who post their own photos.
She termed it a serious violation of privacy and said that allowing such AI prompts is not just unethical but criminal misuse of technology.
Elon Musk’s Earlier Statement on Grok
Earlier on January 3, X owner Elon Musk had commented that blaming Grok for generating harmful content is like blaming a pen for what someone writes. He said the tool only responds to user input and responsibility lies with the user.
However, after the government’s intervention, X has now agreed to tighten safeguards and block such content at the system level.
