Google has introduced several powerful AI features to Gmail, including AI Inbox and AI Overview, making the email platform smarter and more helpful than ever. Now, Gmail will not only receive emails but also act like a personal assistant by telling users which emails are most important and what actions need to be taken.
According to Google, the new system works on Gemini 3’s reasoning power, which means Gmail will no longer just show emails in a list but will understand context and suggest actions based on priority and urgency.
Search Old Emails by Asking Questions
Users will no longer need to scroll endlessly or search using keywords to find old emails. Now, they can simply type questions in natural language in Gmail’s search box, such as “What decision was taken on this project last year?” or “Who sent the flight ticket?”
Gemini AI will analyze past emails and give a direct answer. This feature is currently available only for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
AI Overview Will Summarize Long Email Threads
Just like Google Search, Gmail now gets an AI Overview feature. Often, long email threads become confusing and time-consuming to read. The new AI Overview will summarize long conversations into short, clear bullet points so users can quickly understand what’s going on.
AI Inbox Will Show Important Emails First
Google is also introducing AI Inbox, which will arrange emails not by time, but by importance. It will automatically identify important senders, upcoming deadlines, bills, travel tickets, and appointment reminders, and show them at the top of the inbox.
Google says the system is fully secure and privacy-focused.
‘Help Me Write’ Is Now Free for Everyone
Gmail’s “Help Me Write” feature is now available for free to all users. In addition, Smart Reply has been upgraded to Suggested Reply, which understands the context of the conversation and matches the user’s writing style and tone while drafting replies.
This means Gmail can now help write emails in your own style.
Premium Users Will Get Proofreading and Advanced Tools
Some advanced tools will remain exclusive to paid users. The Proofread feature, which improves grammar, tone, and writing style, will only be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Similarly, the natural-language question feature for searching emails is currently limited to premium users in the US.
