A covert Israeli military operation in eastern Lebanon aimed at recovering the remains of a long-missing Israeli pilot ended in deadly violence, leaving dozens dead and many injured.
According to officials, Israeli special forces carried out a nighttime mission near the town of Nabi Sheet in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley to search for the remains of Ron Arad, an Israeli navigator who went missing in 1986 after his aircraft malfunctioned during a mission over Lebanon.
Operation To Recover Missing Pilot
The mission reportedly involved Israeli commandos entering Lebanese territory by helicopter and targeting a site believed to contain clues about Arad’s fate. The pilot had been captured by Lebanese militants after ejecting from his aircraft in 1986, and Israel has spent decades trying to determine what happened to him.
Despite the high-risk operation, Israeli officials later confirmed that the search failed to uncover any evidence or remains linked to the missing airman.
Clashes With Hezbollah Fighters
The operation quickly escalated when Israeli forces encountered resistance in the area. Reports indicate that Hezbollah fighters and local armed groups confronted the Israeli unit, triggering heavy clashes.
To cover the withdrawal of its forces, Israel launched numerous airstrikes across the region. The intense bombardment caused significant destruction in and around the town.
Dozens Killed And Injured
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that at least 41 people were killed and around 40 others injured during the strikes and clashes in Nabi Sheet and nearby areas.
Local authorities said the explosions were extremely powerful, damaging buildings and sending debris across the town. Residents had earlier evacuated children after Israeli military warnings about possible strikes in the area.
Decades-Long Search For Ron Arad
Ron Arad disappeared nearly four decades ago after his aircraft went down over Lebanon during a bombing mission. He was captured by a Lebanese militia and later handed over to other groups, after which Israel lost contact with him in the late 1980s.
Although Israeli authorities believe he likely died in the 1990s, the country has continued efforts to locate his remains and bring him back home. The latest mission underscores Israel’s long-standing policy of attempting to recover missing soldiers, even decades after their disappearance.
Rising Regional Tensions
The deadly raid comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah and broader instability in the Middle East. Analysts warn that such cross-border operations could further escalate the conflict and worsen humanitarian conditions in Lebanon.
While the operation failed to provide answers about Ron Arad’s fate, it has once again highlighted the long shadow cast by unresolved conflicts in the region.
