One-Third MPs Face Criminal Charges: ADR
A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms has revealed that a significant number of Rajya Sabha members have declared criminal cases. Out of 225 MPs analyzed, 75 around 33% admitted to facing criminal charges in their affidavits.
The report further states that 18% of MPs are involved in serious criminal cases. These include allegations related to murder and attempt to murder, highlighting the gravity of some cases among lawmakers.
In addition to legal concerns, the report sheds light on the wealth of MPs. Around 31 Rajya Sabha members have declared assets exceeding ₹100 crore, categorizing them as billionaires.
Average Wealth and Growing Disparity
The total assets of Rajya Sabha MPs run into thousands of crores, with the average wealth per MP estimated at over ₹87 crore. This reflects a growing trend of wealth concentration in Indian politics.
Political Parties and Criminal Records
The analysis also shows variation across political parties, with several MPs from major parties declaring criminal cases. This indicates that the issue cuts across party lines and remains a systemic concern.
Transparency Through Affidavits
The data is based on self-declared affidavits submitted during elections, which aim to improve transparency in the political system. However, the findings continue to raise questions about candidate selection and accountability.
