Government Decision Announced by MHA
The Union government has revoked the detention of climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that the order cancelling his preventive detention has been issued with immediate effect.
Detention Followed Violent Protests in Leh
Wangchuk had been detained in September 2025 after protests in Leh turned violent. Authorities alleged that he played a role in instigating the agitation, which was linked to demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
The clashes during the protests reportedly led to casualties and injuries, prompting authorities to invoke the stringent NSA and move him to a jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Move Aimed at Restoring Dialogue
Officials said the decision reflects the Centre’s commitment to maintaining peace and creating conditions for dialogue with stakeholders in Ladakh. The revocation comes nearly six months after Wangchuk’s detention.
Wangchuk, known for his environmental activism and education initiatives, has been a prominent voice in the movement seeking constitutional protections and greater political autonomy for Ladakh.
The government’s latest move is expected to ease tensions and encourage discussions on the region’s demands.
