New Delhi: India will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026, and this year’s celebrations will be truly special. The Government of India has chosen the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram”, marking 150 years of the iconic song that played a crucial role in inspiring the freedom movement and shaping the nation’s patriotic spirit.
The song “Vande Mataram” was written in 1875 by Bengali poet Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. During the freedom struggle, it became a powerful symbol of national unity and resistance against colonial rule. To commemorate its 150-year journey, the 2026 Republic Day parade, tableaux, and cultural programmes will revolve around the history, meaning, and emotional significance of this national song.
Two Global Leaders to Be Chief Guests
This year, two top European leaders are expected to be invited as Chief Guests at the Republic Day celebrations:
- Antonio Costa, President of the European Council
- Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
Their presence will underline India’s growing strategic and diplomatic engagement with Europe.
Parade to Showcase the Spirit of “Vande Mataram”
At Kartavya Path, the parade will feature special artworks, paintings, and creative installations inspired by the lyrics and emotions of “Vande Mataram”. According to sources, some rare illustrations made in 1923 based on the song will also be displayed along the parade route, helping people connect more deeply with its historical and cultural roots.
More Than Just a Theme
Apart from the special theme, the 2026 parade will also showcase India’s military strength, cultural diversity, and the vision of a modern, self-reliant nation.
- More than 30 tableaux from different states and ministries will participate.
- Sub-themes like “Mantra of Freedom – Vande Mataram” and “Mantra of Prosperity – Aatmanirbhar Bharat” will be highlighted.
Nationwide Celebrations
Throughout the week, events, art exhibitions, and cultural programmes based on “Vande Mataram” will be organised across the country. The aim is to strengthen the sense of national pride and remind citizens of the song that once ignited the spirit of freedom and continues to symbolize India’s unity, diversity, and progress today.
With this theme, the government wants to celebrate New India through the very song that once awakened the soul of the nation during the freedom struggle and now, on its 150th anniversary, stands as a timeless symbol of India’s identity.
