Kolkata : A man was arrested by police during a routine checkpoint operation near Baguihati in the airport area of Kolkata early on Friday morning. The arrest took place during a “naka checking” drive conducted by the police on VIP Road near Kaikhali, where vehicles and pedestrians were being inspected as part of regular security measures.
According to police sources, officers had received prior information that a man from New Barrackpore might be moving through the area carrying an illegal firearm. Acting on this tip-off, police intensified checking at the checkpoint and closely monitored vehicles and individuals passing through the route.
During the operation, a man identified as Bijoy Chattopadhyay arrived at the checkpoint. Police officers stopped him and conducted a thorough search. During the search, they recovered a small firearm and one live bullet from his possession. When questioned, the accused was unable to produce any valid license or legal documents to justify carrying the weapon. Following the recovery, police immediately seized the firearm and detained the suspect. He was later formally arrested under relevant sections of the Arms Act.
Police officials stated that the accused will be produced before the Barasat Court, where investigators are likely to seek police custody for further questioning. The investigation will focus on determining the source of the firearm, the purpose behind carrying the weapon, and whether any other individuals were involved.
Authorities confirmed that the naka checking operation was part of ongoing security measures to prevent illegal activities and ensure public safety in the area.
