Cargo Vessel Hit by Projectiles in Strategic Shipping Lane
A Thai-flagged cargo vessel heading toward India came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest and most strategically important shipping routes. The vessel was struck by unidentified projectiles on March 11, triggering a fire onboard and forcing an emergency evacuation of crew members.
The cargo ship, identified as Mayuree Naree, was sailing toward Kandla Port when the incident occurred. Maritime security agencies reported that the attack took place roughly 11 nautical miles off the northern coast of Oman.
Fire Breaks Out After Impact
Following the strike, a blaze erupted onboard the cargo vessel, sending smoke rising from the ship’s structure. Maritime authorities later confirmed that the fire was brought under control after the attack.
The bulk carrier had earlier departed from Khalifa Port and was traveling through the narrow shipping corridor when the projectile struck the vessel. The ship is reportedly owned by the Thai shipping company Precious Shipping.
Rescue Operation Saves 20 Crew Members
After the attack, authorities quickly launched a rescue operation in the area. The Omani Navy evacuated 20 of the 23 crew members from the burning vessel and transported them to safety.
However, three crew members remained on board the ship at the time of the evacuation, and officials have not yet provided detailed information about their condition. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the damage and the cause of the attack.
