New Delhi: PayPal has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees across its India operations as the global payments company continues with a broader restructuring and cost-cutting exercise. Multiple reports have put the number of affected employees at around 600, although the company has reportedly given a lower figure of approximately 220 employees for the latest round of workforce reduction. The reported job cuts have affected employees across several functions, including technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance. PayPal’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are among those impacted. The company had more than 6,000 employees in India before the latest reduction.
Employees Report Sudden Job Loss
Several affected employees have reportedly said that they were informed about the termination through calls and did not receive advance notice. Some employees said their access to company systems was disabled shortly after they were informed about the decision. Following the calls, affected workers received off-boarding emails containing details about the next steps. Reports indicate that employees were offered severance-related benefits and assistance with their transition, although individual packages and settlement terms may vary.
Why Is PayPal Cutting Jobs?
The layoffs come as PayPal carries out a major global restructuring programme designed to simplify its operations, improve efficiency and reduce costs. The company had previously outlined plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 20% over a two- to three-year period, with the restructuring expected to generate significant cost savings. The latest India layoffs are therefore being viewed as part of the company’s broader effort to reorganise teams and streamline its operations.
Difference in Reported Layoff Numbers
There is currently a notable difference between the number reported by people familiar with the India layoffs and the figure attributed to the company. While multiple reports have cited around 600 employees as being affected across India, a company spokesperson reportedly put the number at approximately 220 employees, representing about 4% of PayPal’s Indian workforce. The difference means the exact number of employees affected in the latest round should be treated with caution until further official details are provided.
Growing Pressure on India’s Technology Workforce
The PayPal layoffs come amid continued restructuring across India’s technology and global capability-centre ecosystem. Companies are increasingly reviewing workforce requirements as they seek to reduce operating costs, consolidate functions and invest in automation and artificial intelligence. For affected PayPal employees, the sudden nature of the announcements has added uncertainty around employment and future opportunities.
