Kolkata: A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending strong tremors across Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal. The quake occurred around 10:08 AM IST, causing mild panic as residents felt floors and furniture shaking for a few seconds.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of nearly 10 km, which made the shaking more noticeable across the region. The epicenter was reported from Bangladesh, with immediate effects felt across the border in India.
Residents in many parts of Kolkata — including Park Street, Salt Lake, Behala, Howrah, and New Town — reported that ceiling fans and light fixtures began to sway. Several people rushed out of offices and apartments to open areas.
Early reports indicate no significant damage or casualties. Disaster management teams are monitoring the situation, though no aftershock warnings have been issued.
Social media quickly filled with posts from people describing their experience, with many saying they initially thought they felt dizzy before realizing it was an earthquake.
The incident highlights the region’s seismic sensitivity, where quakes in Bangladesh often cause perceptible vibrations in West Bengal due to geographical proximity.
