The central government has announced a major digital-security move: every new smartphone sold in India will now come with the Sanchar Saathi app pre-installed. The app will function just like other default applications that appear on a new device and cannot be removed by users.
In addition, the government has directed smartphone companies to push the app to existing phones through software updates, ensuring widespread adoption.
This initiative aims to strengthen India’s fight against cyber fraud, fake calls and messages, and mobile theft, while also giving citizens a more secure digital experience.
What Is Sanchar Saathi?
Sanchar Saathi is a digital security platform developed by the government to enhance mobile user safety and provide essential telecom-related services. It is currently available as both an app and a website, and until now, its usage was optional. With the new mandate, it is set to become part of every smartphone ecosystem.
Key Features of Sanchar Saathi
1. Block or Track Lost/Stolen Phones
If your device is stolen or misplaced, you can use Sanchar Saathi to block the phone, preventing misuse.
If someone tries to use another SIM in that device, the app can help track the IMEI activity.
Once recovered, the user can request IMEI unblocking.
2. Check All Mobile Connections Under Your Name
With a single tap, users can view all mobile numbers registered to their identity.
This helps detect unknown or fraudulent SIMs mistakenly or illegally issued under one’s ID.
Suspicious connections can be reported and deactivated directly through the app.
3. Report Fraud Calls, SMS, Links, and WhatsApp Messages
Users can instantly report:
- Fake banking or KYC calls
- Electricity/gas bill scams
- Insurance or investment fraud
- Messages from imposters posing as government officials
Although cybercrime complaints must still be filed via cybercrime.gov.in, Sanchar Saathi acts as a quick-alert system for telecom-related fraud.
4. Report Fake Apps, Phishing Links, and Malware Threats
The app also allows users to report harmful:
- Apps
- Website links
- Phishing attempts
- Device cloning activities
Reports can be submitted for content received on SMS, RCS, iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other platforms.
