Goa: A devastating fire at the popular nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa, has killed at least 25 people and left several injured. The blaze, which erupted just after midnight, turned the club into a death trap.
What Happened: Fire, Suffocation & Safety Lapses
According to initial reports, the fire started due to internal fireworks / pyrotechnics used during a live performance. The fire rapidly spread through the building.
Many victims — including both staff and patrons — were trapped inside because the club had narrow exits / limited escape routes. Most of the casualties reportedly died from suffocation, with a few succumbing to burns. Among the deceased were several staff members and at least four tourists.
Government Response: Probe, Compensation & Action
The state government, led by Pramod Sawant (Chief Minister of Goa), has ordered a magisterial inquiry to investigate the tragedy, examine fire-safety compliance and identify those responsible. A committee has been formed and asked to submit its report within a week.
The government announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
In addition, authorities have issued strict warnings: club owners, management, and officials who approved permissions despite safety violations will face punitive action. The government also plans audits of all nightlife venues to enforce fire-safety norms.
