Ranchi: Virat Kohli produced a masterclass at the JSCA Stadium, smashing a magnificent 135 off 120 balls to guide India to a 17-run victory over South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series.
Kohli’s knock — his 52nd ODI century and 83rd international hundred — set up India’s total of 349/8. His 136-run stand with Rohit Sharma, who scored a solid 57, kept India in control and also helped Rohit break Shahid Afridi’s record for most ODI sixes (352).
South Africa Fight Back, But Fall Short
South Africa slipped early to 11/3 and later 77/4, but staged a strong recovery through

Their counterattack pushed the match into the final over, but India held their nerves as South Africa were bowled out for 332, needing 18 off the last over.
Kuldeep Yadav Shines With the Ball
Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav delivered crucial breakthroughs, finishing with 4/68, including the big wickets of Breetzke and Jansen in quick succession. India’s bowlers managed to apply pressure consistently despite South Africa’s late surge.
Speaking after being named Player of the Match, Virat Kohli reflected on his preparation and fitness:
“Today was really nice to get into the game like that. The pitch played well early on before slowing down. Once you get a start, experience takes over, I’ve never been a believer in too much preparation. My work is mostly mental. I’m 37 now and need time for recovery, so I even took a day off before the game.” he said.
He added that playing a single format allows him to manage his workload more efficiently while staying sharp and physically fit.
The teams will now travel to Raipur, where the second ODI will be played on Wednesday.
