Harmer’s eight-wicket match haul and Bavuma’s resilient fifty hand India their second home Test loss in a year as Gill’s injury leaves hosts a batter short
Kolkata: India suffered another disappointing home Test defeat within a year, crashing to a 30-run loss against South Africa in the series opener at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Chasing only 124 runs, the hosts were bundled out for 93 on a deteriorating surface that offered unpredictable bounce.
South Africa took control early on Day 3 with a crucial 44-run partnership between captain Temba Bavuma and Corbin Bosch. The stand frustrated the Indian attack and helped push the visitors to a 123-run lead, a total that proved decisive on a ragged pitch. Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 anchored the innings and set up the match.
India’s chase began under pressure with captain Shubman Gill ruled out due to severe neck spasms, leaving India effectively one batsman short. The start got worse as Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and KL Rahul (1) fell cheaply to left-arm seamer Marco Jansen, pushing India into early trouble.
Off-spinner Simon Harmer produced the match-defining spell, adding to his first-innings 4-30 with a brilliant 4-21 in the second innings. His performance guided South Africa to their first Test win in India in 15 years, since their victory in Nagpur 2010. India collapsed from 77-7 despite a brief resistance from Axar Patel, who smashed 26 off 17 balls to keep slim hopes alive.
With Gill unavailable to bat, South Africa needed only nine Indian wickets. Jansen removed both openers before Harmer dismissed Rishabh Pant (2) and Dhruv Jurel (13). Harmer later trapped Ravindra Jadeja (18) lbw, while Washington Sundar (31) was caught at slip off Aiden Markram. Kuldeep Yadav (1) also fell lbw, completing India’s downfall.
Axar’s cameo caused brief jitters, but Keshav Maharaj delivered the final blow as South Africa moved closer to only their second-ever Test series win in India, the last coming in 2000.
The two-Test series concludes with the final match in Guwahati from November 22–26, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is.
