India Clarifies Position on Hormuz Coalition
India on Monday said it has not held any discussions with the United States about joining a joint naval force aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route currently affected by rising regional tensions.
The clarification came after reports suggested that Washington was exploring a multinational coalition to secure shipping in the strategic waterway.
MEA Responds to Reports
Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India has not engaged in any bilateral talks with the US regarding participation in such a military initiative.
He added that while discussions among several countries are taking place on the issue, India has not been part of any direct negotiations with Washington so far.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments pass. Disruptions in the region have raised concerns over energy supplies and international trade.
Amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, several countries are considering steps to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the strait.
