The first phase of Noida International Airport at Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, was officially inaugurated on March 28, 2026, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This greenfield airport is expected to ease pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and improve air connectivity for the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.
Key Features of Phase 1 Phase 1 has been developed over approximately 1,334 hectares and includes:
- A 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft
- A modern passenger terminal with advanced facilities
- Cargo handling infrastructure
- Initial annual capacity of 12 million passengers
The airport is designed to support around 150 flights per day in the early phase.
Flights to Begin Soon Although the airport has been inaugurated, regular commercial flight operations are expected to start in the coming weeks, most likely by mid-April 2026. Initial services will focus on domestic routes. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are expected to be among the first to operate from the new airport.
Future Expansion Plans The airport has been planned in multiple phases:
- Phase 2 (around 2030): Addition of a second runway and terminal expansion to handle about 30 million passengers annually.
- Phase 3 (around 2034): Further development to reach around 50 million passengers per year.
- Phase 4 (around 2036 onwards): Full expansion with capacity scaling up to 70 million passengers annually.
In the long term, the airport is envisioned to have multiple runways and become one of India’s largest aviation hubs.
Economic Impact The new airport is expected to boost tourism, trade, logistics, and employment in the region. It will also support growth in real estate, hospitality, and related sectors in Noida, Greater Noida, and surrounding areas.
