Supreme Court Rejects Petition to Ban Film Yadav Ji Ki Love Story

New Delhi, February 25, 2026: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday refused to impose a ban on the upcoming film Yadav Ji Ki Love Story or order a change in its title, dismissing a petition that alleged the movie would negatively portray the Yadav community.

A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan heard the plea filed by the chief of the Vishwa Yadav Parishad, who had argued that the title and content of the film could harm the image of the Yadav community and propagate offensive stereotypes.

Court: Title Not Offensive

After reviewing the case, the Supreme Court said the title of the film does not contain any derogatory or negative reference that would portray the community in a bad light. The judges noted that unlike previous cases — such as the controversy around a film titled Ghooskhor Pandat — the words in this title do not carry any unacceptable meaning against a particular community.

The bench described the concerns raised in the petition as “wholly unfounded” and emphasised that just because a title mentions a community’s name does not automatically make it harmful or defamatory.

Fiction and Free Expression

The court also categorised Yadav Ji Ki Love Story as a work of fiction and said it could not interfere with creative expression simply based on speculative objections. Arguments made by the petitioner’s counsel — including concerns about the portrayal of the female lead and inter-community relationships — did not convince the bench.

In its order, the Supreme Court clarified that none of the reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2) of the Constitution (which allows for restrictions on free speech and expression) were attracted in this case.

Yadav Ji Ki Love Story is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, and will continue to be screened without any change to its title following the court’s decision.
