Canada Announces $100 Million Scholarship Program for Indian Students, Introduces Hybrid Study Centres in India

Canada has announced a major $100 million scholarship initiative aimed at expanding higher education opportunities for Indian students and strengthening academic collaboration between India and Canada.

The new programme will provide financial support to Indian students who wish to pursue higher education in Canadian universities. The initiative includes up to 200 fully funded scholarships that will be administered through the University of Toronto and offered to students admitted to participating institutions across Canada. The scholarships will cover various academic levels, including undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral programmes. In many cases, the funding may also support tuition fees, living expenses, and research costs, making Canadian education more accessible to Indian students.

Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy

The scholarship programme is part of the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy, a broader framework aimed at deepening academic cooperation and research partnerships between the two nations. The initiative focuses on strengthening student exchange programmes, joint research projects, and collaborative academic courses between universities in Canada and India.

A key highlight of the initiative is the establishment of three hybrid study locations in India. These centres will allow Indian students to start their academic programmes locally before completing their degrees at Canadian universities. The hybrid campuses will focus on advanced research areas such as artificial intelligence, technology, and innovation.

University Partnerships

Along with the scholarship programme, Canada and India have also announced 13 new agreements between universities from both countries. These partnerships aim to expand opportunities for student exchange, joint degrees, and collaborative research across multiple sectors.

The main focus areas for collaboration include artificial intelligence, clean energy, agriculture, health sciences, and public policy. Experts say these partnerships could open new academic pathways for students while encouraging institutions to work together on global research challenges.

India remains one of the largest sources of international students for Canada, and this initiative is expected to further strengthen educational ties between the two countries while improving access to global learning opportunities.
