Meta-owned Instagram has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Your Algorithm”, aimed at making the Reels feed more transparent and personalised. The feature has currently been rolled out in the United States and will be expanded to other countries, including India, in the coming weeks.
With this update, users get direct control over what appears in their Reels feed. Using artificial intelligence, Instagram will now clearly show users which topics and interests its algorithm believes they prefer—and allow them to modify those choices.
Until now, users could only rely on limited options like “Not Interested” or “Snooze”, but these tools offered little insight into how recommendations were actually made. The new feature goes a step further by opening up the algorithm itself.
How ‘Your Algorithm’ Works
Instagram’s AI analyses recent user activity—such as watch time, likes, shares, and interactions—to generate a list of top interests. For example, it may identify that a user enjoys creativity, sports, fitness, or skateboarding.
This list is presented with a simple AI-generated summary explaining the user’s preferences.
A new icon will appear at the top-right corner of the Reels feed. Tapping it opens the Your Algorithm dashboard, where users can:
- See which topics Instagram prioritises for them
- Choose to see more or less of any suggested theme
- Add or remove topics manually if their interests change
Over time, Reels recommendations will automatically adjust based on these inputs.
Key Benefits of the New Feature
- Greater transparency: Users can finally understand why certain content appears in their feed
- Improved personalisation: Content updates as interests evolve
- Boost for creators: Better topic matching helps quality content reach the right audience
- More user control: Meta says this is a step toward stronger user empowerment and trust
With over 400 million Instagram users in India, many of whom spend hours watching Reels, this feature is expected to significantly benefit content creators, influencers, and small businesses once it launches locally.
