Microsoft Gaming Appoints Asha Sharma as New CEO, Succeeding Phil Spencer

Microsoft Gaming, the parent division of Xbox and one of the most influential names in the global video game industry, has announced a major leadership change. Asha Sharma has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer, replacing longtime leader Phil Spencer, who is retiring after nearly four decades with Microsoft.

Phil Spencer’s Legacy

Phil Spencer spent 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading the Xbox and gaming division. Under his tenure, the business expanded significantly across consoles, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming. Spencer played a pivotal role in major acquisitions such as Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Mojang (Minecraft), helping Microsoft grow its influence in the gaming world.

In his farewell message, Spencer described his time at Microsoft as “an epic ride” and expressed confidence in the company’s future direction. He will remain with Microsoft in an advisory role through the summer to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Asha Sharma: The New Vision for Microsoft Gaming

Asha Sharma brings a distinct blend of operational leadership and technological expertise to Microsoft Gaming. Before this appointment, she served as President of CoreAI Product at Microsoft, overseeing global AI initiatives and products. Sharma previously held executive roles at Instacart and Meta, contributing to large-scale product development and operational growth.

In her first internal message, Sharma emphasized a commitment to great games, a strong connection with players, and a balanced integration of AI—stating she has “no tolerance for bad AI.” She also signaled a renewed focus on the Xbox platform and its community as central pillars of future growth.

Organizational Changes at Microsoft Gaming

Along with Sharma’s appointment, Microsoft confirmed other leadership changes within the gaming division:

  • Matt Booty is promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, where he will oversee nearly 40 development studios including Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, Blizzard, and King.
  • Sarah Bond, President and Chief Operating Officer of Xbox, is departing the company as part of the transition.

Industry Perspective

The leadership shift comes at a time of evolving challenges and opportunities in gaming. Microsoft Gaming reported a decline in revenue in recent quarters, amid competitive pressure from rivals like Sony’s PlayStation and broader industry transformation driven by technology, subscription services, and AI. Analysts see Sharma’s blend of consumer platform experience and AI leadership as critical for guiding the business forward.

What This Means for Xbox and Microsoft Gaming

Under Asha Sharma’s leadership, Microsoft Gaming is expected to:

Reinforce the Xbox ecosystem and strengthen ties with core players
Prioritize compelling storytelling and innovative gameplay
Balance AI and creativity without overreliance on technology
Build strategic plans for the future of gaming across devices and platforms

Sharma steps into the role during Microsoft Gaming’s 25th anniversary year—a symbolic quarter for both legacy and future expansion in the global gaming market.
